Abstract
[Introduction]: In this chapter we describe the Oceania region and then present a brief history of literacy development in the region, first in the South Pacific, and then in Australia and New Zealand. We will show how present literacy practices have been influenced by these historical events. Finally, we will reflect on what has been learned about the development of literacy in Oceania and discuss some of the accomplishments.
