Abstract

This study examines the influence of intrinsic and extrinsic motives on peer-to-peer (P- to-P) service providers to engage in the sharing economy. The research was undertaken with Uber drivers and Airbnb hosts in Hong Kong and the USA. A qualitative method with a focus on in-depth interview was conducted with 21 P-to-P service providers. The findings indicate that extrinsic motivations are the primary factors driving individuals to engage in the sharing economy, particularly in the case of Uber drivers. Whilst some Airbnb hosts are primarily extrinsically driven, some were intrinsically inclined. The paper reports on preliminary findings based on existing data.
