Abstract

Parallel leadership, a conceptualized model of educational leadership for contemporary, collaborative educational organizations, is underpinned by the concepts of mutualism, shared beliefs and values, and allowance for individual expression. Importantly, it is in recognition of the relational nature between the principal (leadership team) and the teacher leaders (formal and informal). It is founded on a belief that leadership in educational organizations is first and foremost to focus on the interrelationships of multiple and complex mixes of people in school communities on a daily basis. Integral to the research and development of this leadership approach has been the focus of leadership for whole school improvement responding to the continual rapid changes in societal behavior and expectations and the discontinuous nature of that change. Regardless of ever-changing educational landscapes, the core of this approach has been sustained because of the enabling processes that respect the contributions and aspirations of the people in their setting. This chapter traces the evolutionary development of parallel leadership and its sustainability over time in a range of different schools and educational systems.
