Shiau, Jim S. and Thomas, Caroline J. and Smith, Catherine A. (2008) A FLAC model for classical earth pressure problems. In: 1st International FLAC/DEM Symposium on Numerical Modeling, 25-27 Aug 2008, Minneapolis, United States.
Abstract
The paper involves the development and verification of numerical models for classical earth pressure problems using the computer program Fast Lagrangian Analysis of Continua (FLAC). The numerical models created are used to investigate situations of active and passive earth pressures on a rigid retaining wall. A number of problems have been encountered and methods trialled in an attempt to overcome these, with successful techniques highlighted. The investigation undertaken has shown that FLAC is a suitable tool for analysing these earth pressure problems. Design charts and tables are prepared for design practices.
