Factors contributing to student attitude about learning outcomes when engaging and undertaking assessment in teams in accounting courses.
In: 2021 AFAANZ Conference, 5 July - 10 July 2021, Australia.
Abstract
The multidisciplinary nature of the work environment for accountants today demands that new graduates are better equipped in professional skills such as teamwork. However, research exploring those critical factors that contribute to the attitudes of students to teamwork in accounting is limited. In this paper empirical work across various disciplines is used to develop a construct to assess the attitudes of students towards team based assessment in the accounting curricula. An exploratory research approach is used. This involved identifying relevant dimensions and an initial set of attributes, which were tested for content validity and construct validity. The dimensions, selected from an extensive review of the literature, informed the development of a survey instrument. These dimensions were grouped into categories including, enjoyment, workload, trust, interactions, grades, collaboration and roles. The survey instrument recorded the attitudes of students towards the variables utilising a five-point Likert scale. Factor analysis ensured that the questions asked in the survey instrument relate to the attitude construct being measured.
Consequently, this research employed a seven-factor solution where 67.823% of the common variance shared by the 23 attributes is accounted for by 7 factors. In light of the EFA methodology used, the solution suggests meaningful factors and as such contributes significantly to relevant research.
