Abstract
This chapter provides a general overview of the evolution, domestication and history of the horse with a focus on its development and changing role in modern production systems. During the compilation of this chapter, an attempt has been made to tabulate all horse breeds; light, pony, heavy and wild. The horse is unique compared to other livestock species in that it has a multi-faceted role in society. Horses are valued as companion, sporting and production animals. The chapter also highlights current issues and future challenges associated with equine husbandry and management.
