Abstract
Online university enrolment is increasing, appealing as a flexible, convenient, and cost-effective option. Many online students are from non-traditional backgrounds and underprepared for university, increasing their risk of attrition. Regional universities, with up to 75% of students enrolled online, are thus uniquely vulnerable. Current scholarship indicates retention of online learners requires skill development and a sense of belonging to the university. In response, an online study support program was developed. Several principles from ‘The National Guidelines for Improving student access, participation and success in higher education in Australia’ (Stone, 2017) drove the program. The program was piloted in three semesters of 2019. Incidental feedback indicates students appreciate connecting with the university, and their peers. In 2020/1, an online engagement framework will be used to evaluate and invigorate the program.
