Abstract

The project was carried out to determine what light naphtha fuels could be potentially refined and used as a n additive in diesel fuel without compromising on performance or emission parameters negatively. Research was conducted to determine viable light naphtha fuels from oil refinery data sheets and chemical analysis reports performed by institutes. Pentane, hexane and cyclohexane were chosen as suitable fuel additives and that were of relatively high abundance within the light naphtha group. Fuel ratios of 5%, 10% and 15% were proposed and tested. The pentane fuel blends were tested experimentally along with standard diesel fuel in a 4-stroke, single cylinder, air-cooled diesel engine. The performance parameters of torque and power were measured, with the emission parameters of NOx, CO, CO2 and HC being measured. The fuels were measured at 1800RPM, 2000RPM, 2600RPM, 2900RPM and 3800RPM.

The experimental results obtained for the diesel and pentane blends were used to develop and verify the accuracy of an ANSYS Forte model of the test engine used. The simulation model was then used to test the hexane and cyclohexane fuel blends without experimental testing being required. The difference fuel additive affects were then compared to determine which light naphtha fuel is most suitable as an additive in diesel fuel.
