Abstract

This thesis develops an alternative to the current methods of load estimation on a hypersonic rocket. Scripts were created in Python to generate and run many CFD simulations at different trajectory points and angles of attack. The specialised hypersonic CFD solver Eilmer was used along with the USQ High Performance Computing (HPC) cluster from a minimal amount of user input. The pressure distribution output from CFD simulations were used as the loading conditions in structural FEA simulation. The maximum stress on the body was extracted and the results fitted to curves providing simple analytical functions of the loads which can be used for predicting performance in future flights over a range of trajectories. The results show that with aeroelastic effects ignored structural loads on the rocket body can be well predicted in the hypersonic regime using a transfer function incorporating only the dynamic pressure and AOA. Aerodynamic coefficients were found to be more sensitive to the grid mesh sizing. Analysis of the deflected geometry suggests that further work is required to couple the two-way fluid-structure interactions.
