Abstract

A sharp increase in small scale battery installations for the storage of energy generated by photovoltaic solar systems has increased the need to monitor the state of health (SOH) of batteries at multiple small scale locations.

The analysis of the battery systems needs to fulfil several requirements including cost effective and portable. The ability to analyse the system cell by cell is critical in ensuring the dead cells are identified whilst leaving the good cells active to carry on running.

Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) is a unique method that enables the internal components of a battery to be analysed as separate parts. Research into current EIS techniques has highlighted they use large high power bench mounted machines that are neither portable nor cheap.

This project has developed a prototype low cost hand held meter that is able to perform EIS measurements in the field. This separation of the electrolyte from the solid to electrolyte interface within the cell for analysis will enable cost effective decisions to be made as to replenishment or replacement of the cell.
