Abstract

In July 2018, the Office of the Chief Scientist produced an occasional paper titled 'Improving the mathematics performance of Australia’s students'. Despite, the focus on STEM and STEAM in schools across Australia, this paper highlighted that 'Australia’s Mathematics performance has stalled or declined' in global education rankings (Office of Chief Scientist, 2018, p1). Addressing this decline is essential. By studying schools with the most improved mathematics results, the paper also showed that schools can turn around their results in two years and a 'mastery-focused classroom and teachers enthusiastic about teaching mathematics are the key' (Office of Chief Scientist, 2018, p1). The paper argues this can be done by creating classrooms that are focused on developing understanding of mathematics, and by embedding learning in the Australian Curriculum. This paper argues that by focussing on MATHS (Mindset, Australian Curriculum, Thinking, Hands-on manipulatives and student diversity), we can create environments where students are actively engaged in improving mathematical skills and understanding through authentic, engaging and meaningful tasks.
