Abstract

A holistic approach to nursing care ensures the integrity of the individual and that the control of health decisions is maintained for the care recipient. A cornerstone of the provision of holistic care is mental health. Nurses, in every practice context, are responsible for the mental health of the people they care for. This chapter will provide the basis for meeting this responsibility through exploration of what mental health means and your role in the provision of mental health care.

A contemporary approach to supporting mental health is the recovery model. How nursing works with this in recovery-oriented practice will be examined, as will the development of a therapeutic relationship, which is an invaluable skill for all nurses. How to conduct a thorough mental health assessment, common treatments used in mental health care, and the role of legislation and health promotion will also be considered. Finally, the contexts in which specialist mental health nurses practice will be introduced.
