Abstract

Model updating of real structures are often found to be challenging due to the complexities associated with initial Finite Element (FE) modelling and choosing the appropriate tuning parameters and associated boundary limits. This paper discusses the authors’ experience in automated model updating of a medium rise building structure with the aim of providing some useful tips to address the aforementioned challenges in automated model updating. First, the paper highlights the importance of choosing the correct initial FE model in order to obtain better results in automated model updating of real structures. Then, a parametric study based approach is introduced to identify tuning parameters and appropriate ranges to maximize the correlation of the updated model whilst preserving its physical relevance. The test structure considered in this paper is a 10 story building of Queensland University of Technology (QUT) which is equipped with a vibration monitoring system to cap-ture ambient vibration.
