Abstract

This paper describes the development of a smart robotic catheter for endovascular applications that will enhance clinician interpretation of the endovascular workspace. The focus of the development is on the precise placement of guide wires and catheters for a variety of diagnostic and interventional endovascular applications. The research has demonstrated the feasibility for single use catheters able to sense changes in shape, contact with categories of encountered structures, motion relative to the vascular lumen and the ability to interface with scan data indicating perturbations in state in real-time. This result enables a real opportunity to produce real-tools for the enhancement of future therapies within an acceptable purchase cost frame.
