Abstract
The annual Snapshot Survey run by the Directorate of Defence Aviation and Airforce Safety (DDAAFS) of the Australian Defence Force was introduced in 2013 in an effort to strengthen the organisation’s surveillance of
safety culture. With nearly 9,000 respondents and the release of more than 160 individual reports to commanding officers, the 2015 Snapshot Survey could be viewed as a success.Based on the Job Demands-Resources (JD-R) model, it is an example of an organisational initiative that has both immediate and long-term benefits. This article describes the model underlying Snapshot, the various scales used to define the major components of the JD-R model, and how commanders can use survey results to improve the performance of the units for which they are responsible.
