Chapters in the first section of this book are intended to provide the context and background for the various case studies which are provided in the following section. This chapter focuses on the ways in which the contemporary university engages with its community, particularly in terms of the increasing social, cultural and environmental issues which have an impact upon regional communities. Many of the ideas and argu­ments presented in the chapter are based on the responses by regional universities to various pressures and influences, particularly in relation to community engagement. The framework used to describe such change has been derived from a model of change based upon Kuhn's (1970) The Structure of Scientific Revolutions. It is argued that this model provides an appropriate structure for any narrative which attempts to describe the changing nature of community engagement in higher education. The case studies included in Section Two of the book reflect the ways in which regional universities might respond (and, in fact, the ways that some are already responding) in redefining the relationship between a university and its community.
