Abstract
This article argues the case for reinvigorating teacher preparation for the middle years in NZ by establishing a specialised focus on middle level education (Years 7-10). The article draws its data from a doctoral research study (Shanks, 2010) that interviewed teacher educators to investigate the extent to which developmental needs during early adolescence are accommodated in teacher education programmes in NZ. The study revealed a general lack of knowledge or understanding among participants with respect to the well-documented developmental and educational needs of young adolescents. The article concludes by making three recommendations to improve the current situation.
