Abstract
In this chapter we define workforce diversity and its dimensions and reasons for increased diversity in workplaces. We note diversity in the international areana although this is discussed in greater detail in Chapter 19 to point out that given globalisation, cultural diversity is unavoidable in today’s companies. We further examine the current situation in Malaysia, the USA and Australia. We also discuss employment equity, consider the need for employment equity, present arguments for and against affirmative action and employment equity, as well as various international applications of employment equity. In the chapter we use health service examples of one state in Australia to illustrate the implementation of relevant laws in that state and their application in a specific work context. Finally, we look at a couple of diversity programmes at some Canadian banks.
