Abstract

This paper asks 'Are there alternatives to Cognitive Behaviour Therapy in working with the anxiety driven responses of children with autism?' It proposes that there are alternatives and that sandplay (an expressive therapy) can be an appropriate intervention particularly in working in schools with children with autism and communication difficulties. It proposes that sandplay therapy may offer school counsellors opportunities that the more cognitive therapies do not. Through the use of a case study, the paper discusses and illustrates an intervention with a seven year old boy with autism across 12 sessions of sandplay in a school in Queensland, Australia. It also advocates for the use of sandplay, with a child who at first needs to learn to play. This paper draws the counsellor's attention to the developmental stages that may follow when the child feels secure enough to proceed. This paper also draws our attention to the legitimate use of case study research in counselling.
